Morning Poem

David Watts ia a Gastroenterologist on the staff of University of California, San Francisco.   He is also an inventor and a poet.  He teaches a popular course on poetry at San Francisco's Fromm Institute.  He sometimes writes under the name Harvey Ellis.  This poem is from the Harvey Ellis book Sleep not sleep.   Many of the Ellis poems are the result of ideas from dreams.

Now you remember what the sun looked like - soft, no glare
A peek of cloud to drift by
just at the right time.

Now you remember rain, its cold eclair
for your morning breakfast.
What will you do with this knowledge
In its gelatin capsule

What of sleep and the bitter alarm?

When does the world turn slowly enough?
When the chance to get enough rest.
